The Plant Cell published its first issue in January 1989, 20 years ago this month, and within three years was the highest-impact primary research journal in plant biology, a position it has held ever since. The journal will be celebrating its birthday throughout 2009 with special content in the journal and online as well as a symposium at Plant Biology 2009 in Honolulu, HI, in July. In its first 20 years, the journal has published 4,200 articles and has been cited over 250,000 times. In 2008, the online journal was accessed by more than 1.3 million hosts.
