RESEARCH & EDUCATION PROGRAMS - Funding for Plant Biologists in NSF's Division of Chemistry

Following an exhaustive, multi-year review of its programs, the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry recently published a "Dear Colleague" letter that outlines the resulting structural realignments of its programs. These changes, which take effect with the July 2009 proposal submission window, include the introduction of eight new programs, a number of which ought to be of interest to plant biologists and biochemists because they explicitly target the interfaces between chemistry and biology.

If you are not familiar with the NSF's Division of Chemistry or its realigned programs, you may want to begin by checking out the "Finding a Home for an Unsolicited Proposal" Decision Tree diagram, below.

Fuller descriptions of each program are available in a new brochure on the division's website; and the NSF encourages prospective PIs to contact pertinent program officers with more specific questions regarding proposal ideas.
