2007 Membership Campaign Winners
ASPB thanks all members who participated in 2007 Membership Campaigns. Below are the lucky winners and a few quick quotes on “Why ASPB membership is important to me.”

Renew by December 1, 2007, Winners

Free Year of Membership—Satou Mita

iPOD Shuffle—Robert Leonard
I’ve been a member of ASPP (now ASPB) since about 1970, when the journal came in a plain paper cover and the annual meeting was held at a host university. The accommodations were dormitory rooms! I’ve watched the Society grow into its present world-class status, meeting in major convention centers and providing electronic access to two superb journals. I can’t imagine working in the field of plant biology all those years and not having been a member of ASPB.

iPOD Nano—Qi Xie
To be an ASPB member, I really think I am a plant biologist of this world.

Grand Prize Winner
Round Trip Airfare (up to $800) and Registration to ASPB’s 2008 Annual Meeting in Mérida, Mexico

Jesus Arellano
ASPB is important to me because it is a key organization for plant scientists. Being a member, I regularly receive information from ASPB about what is going on in plant science around the world, and this permits me to be up-to-date with many issues concerned with plant research. More importantly, it enables me to develop linkages with the scientists who are engaged in my area of research in plant science. Additionally, I have online access to Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell and can avail myself of special deals on registration fees etc., to attend ASPB annual meetings.

I have had the privilege of attending a number of national and regional meetings, at all of which I've been exposed to cutting-edge research and have had the chance to network with leading scientists in my field. I also appreciate and applaud the Women in Plant Biology Committee. I was able to attend the WIPB luncheon at the 2007 national meeting. The speaker, Dr. Jo Handelsman from the National Academy of Sciences, was excellent. Through ASPB’s affiliation with the Botanical Society of America, I am also a member of the “Master Plant Science Team” of the Planting Science education initiative. This education outreach program, which partners scientist mentors with students to engage in hands-on plant investigations, is a perfect example of how I think a national science society should be fostering the next generation of scientists, and I am proud to be a part of it.

I am really amazed at how much attention the established members of ASPB give to people just starting out, undergrad students, grad students, and postdocs.

ASPB membership is very important to me because it helps me in networking with other scientists with common interests through participation in the meetings, workshops, and conferences sponsored by the Society.

Henry Daniell
I joined ASPB (then ASPP) in 1980. As you may have guessed, I am an old-timer in ASPB, and I joined this association when I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign, and continued my membership when I was a faculty member at Washington State University, Auburn University, and the University of Central Florida in the past 28 years.

I have been a member of different sections of ASPB, including the Midwestern, Western, and Southern sections. Both ASPP and ASPB have been my source of inspiration and information all these years. I cherish wonderful memories and the friendship of the dear colleagues and students I gained through ASPB over all these years.

Lawrence Smart
Success as a scientist and educator requires social interactions: with colleagues, students, and the public. As a member of ASPB, I have wonderful opportunities to foster those interactions with a large group of productive folks who have common interests and a cooperative spirit to advance our field of study.
