Fellowships Application
The 2010 SURF Application Is Now Closed.
CORE COMPONENTS OF THE SURF APPLICATION
This reference is designed to allow early-bird SURFers to prepare some of
the content of their application. This is NOT the complete SURF application.
The official application with complete directions is available only on-line
and only during the official submission period.
STUDENT COMPONENTS
Research Project Requirements:
- Title of proposed research project.
- A project description that clearly delineates the rationale, significance,
and goals of the project and provides a clear outline of the experimental
approach. The project description must not exceed one page. The student should
be the primary author of the project description, but it is expected that
the research mentor will provide guidance.
- Evidence of preparation by the student for successful completion of the
project (relevant course background, classroom laboratory preparation, independent
study, previous research experience, etc.).
Personal Statement:
- Your long-term career objectives
- How the award of an ASPB Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship will
enhance your career objectives
Letter of Recommendation:
Upload online a letter of recommendation from a college or university faculty
member, other than the faculty mentor, who knows your performance well. The
letter should address your preparation for the project, your potential to carry
out the project successfully, and your potential to succeed in a career in plant
biology.
Transcript(s):
Submit one official transcript of your academic record (or one from each institution
you have attended). Freshmen only send your high school transcript also.
Scan transcripts as text (not as a photo image). You may upload online
or mail hardcopy transcripts to ASPB using the address at the end of this application.
Transcripts must be submitted/postmarked by February 26, 2010.
MENTOR COMPONENTS
Research Project
- A description of the research project, including:
- a brief project overview that clearly indicates how the project reinforces
your research program (one page limit)
- a brief description of the facilities available to support the research
- a statement of the anticipated outcomes from the project
- a supply budget for the project ($700 maximum)
- Your experience in mentoring undergraduate research, including:
- a list of undergraduate students from the past five years and their
current professional status
- a description of your current laboratory group (numbers of undergraduate,
graduate, postdoc, and technical positions)
- your plans for mentoring the student during the project (the nature
of interactions). If someone else will be responsible for supervision,
provide the name and Curriculum Vitae for that person.
