A Contest for Plant Biology Videos on YouTube
This open competition is for the best new plant biology videos published on YouTube. Created by ASPB Grant Award Program winner Dan Cosgrove, the contest aims (a) to encourage budding film makers and other creative individuals to produce informative and entertaining plant biology videos, (b) to increase the availability and range of short videos for use by educators, (c) to increase exposure of the public, particularly younger members of society, to plant biology, and (d) to establish a simple webpage with links to recommended videos.

ASPB member and radio producer, Beth Judy has been very busy spreading seeds of enthusiasm for plant science since winning a Grant Awards Program award from ASPB in 2006. With the help of GAP funds, Judy has expanded the outreach of her radio show, “The Plant Detective” starring Flora Delaterre (voiced by Judy). The 90-second show features the world-wide adventures of Detective Delaterre as she searches for specific medicinal plants and discourses on their benefits, risks and efficacy. Judy emphasizes that her goal is conservation rather than promoting self-care with plants. Judy believes that people will more readily connect with the importance of plants if they learn how directly plants can impact their health. In Judy's newest project, Flora Delaterre has hopped out of her adult-focused radio adventures onto the pages of a coloring book. The book, entitled, Medicinal Plants of North America is geared towards kids 7 and up as well as ‘colorists of any age’. To learn more about Judy’s projects check out www.floradelaterre.com

David Salt, 2005 GAP Winner's Genomics eXplorer: This 3-D interactive exhibit of a plant cell allows visitors to walk through and have virtual control over environmental sensors. The exhibit is currently under construction. A slide show of its progress is on the Genomics eXplorer website. This graphically appealing and informative website gives on-line visitors an enticing peek at the exhibit’s design and outreach opportunities. The exhibit is set to open at the 2007 Indiana State Fair and then travel to science centers, museums and botanic garden venues throughout the United States.
